2017 Softball Rules

Mound Distances:

  • 8U, 10U – 35 Feet
  • 12U – 40 Feet
  • 14U, 16U, 18U – 43 Feet

Point System:

  • 3 points for a win
  • 2 points for a tie
  • 1 point for a loss

Tie Breakers

  • Two-Way Tie Breaker: When two teams finish in a tie for a playoff or tournament spot the following tie breaking formula will be used. {Please note you cannot break a 3+ way tie using a 2-way tie breaker, the 3+ way tie breaker must be used in that case}
    • Head to Head
    • Fewest Runs Allowed
    • Runs Scored 
    • Coin Flip 
  • Three or more tie-breaker: When three or more teams are tied.
    • When all tied teams have played each other and one team has beaten ALL the other tied teams without a loss, that team will be awarded the playoff spot. All teams must have played each other to use this.
    • Fewest Runs Allowed
    • Runs Scored 
    • Coin Flip 

Duration of Games:

  • 8U and 10U will be 6 innings
    • No new inning may begin after 1 hour and 20 minutes
  • 12U, 14U, 16U, 18U will be 7 innings
    • No new inning may begin after 1 hour and 30 minutes
  • After first inning pitcher gets 3 pitches to warm up and no infield/outfield.
  • Pool Play Games can end in a tie. If time allows we will go to the international tie breaker
  • No time limit for playoff games unless the tournament director deems it absolutely necessary.

Run Ahead Rule (applies to 6 inning and 7 inning games):

  • 12 runs after 3 innings, 10 runs after 4 innings, 8 runs after 5 innings

Modified 8U and 10U Rules:

  • No stealing at 8U
  • 10U can steal 2nd and 3rd only
    • Cannot advance home on an overthrow on a steal attempt at 3rd.
  • Cannot advance on a dropped 3rd strike
  • No infield fly rule
  • 5 run max per ½ inning for the first 3 innings. 4th, 5th and 6th will be unlimited runs.
  • Bunting is allowed, but no slash bunting is allowed for safety reasons.
  • 10 players, 4 outfielders in the field are allowed at 8U and 10U only

Protests:

  • An umpire will decide all protests on the field.

Courtesy Runners:

  • May be used for the catcher and pitcher anytime.
  • Must be used for the catcher with 2 out.
  • Runner from bench or last batted out.

Line Up:

  • All teams have the option to bat as many players as they select. In order for a player to play defense, she must be listed in the current batting order. If a team chooses to replace a starter with a substitute that person must be someone not in the game at all. Starters may then re-enter the game one time for the player that was substituted for her and remain in the same spot in the batting order.
    • 12U, 14U, 16U, 18U have the option of using a designated hitter.

Rosters: All rosters must be submitted prior to the tournament

  • All players must play in at least 1 pool play game to qualify for the playoff or championship games.
  • Birth Certificates/Proof Of Birth (REQUIRED): All players on your roster are required to carry some sort of proof of birth, typically a passport or birth certificate to the game. If you do not have this at the field and a player is challenge he must be removed from the game if no proof can be provided. If USABL deems that you have an ineligible player it will be an automatic forfeit.

Home/Away team: 

  • A coin flip by the umpire will determine home teams for all pool play games. In playoff rounds the higher seed will be the home team.
